Spain in August - is it worth it?

We snagged a great deal to Spain in August and wondering: now what? We are a family with two kids (ages 9 and 12) and it is their first time in Europe. We had planned to tour around Spain for 13 days but I read that the heat is unbearable. We don't really want to spend much time at the beach, and we don't like huge crowds which is apparently the beach scene in August. Yet we're easy-going and not complainers..but two of us are kids. Should we still head for the south of Spain? Substitute northern Spain? Train it to another country with better climate and less crowding? I really appreciate your opinions and advice. Thanks.

Spain is a big country with choices regarding climate zone, elevation, etc. I'll let others answer your main question and just address your weather question in my reply.

You asked about the weather on Spain's South Coast in August. Here's the stats on Malaga: in the last 13 years, 94% of the days between Aug 10 - 20 have been "humid" (dew point over 65); and 28% of the days have been "sweltering" (dew point over 70).

I am not sure who finds the heat in Spain in summer unbearable. We live in southern spain now but grew up and spent most of our lives in Australia so don´t find it bad at all. Is it hot - yes. Is it unbearable - no. Why would so many people live there if it were?

You won´t find huge crowds - we find cities like Seville more crowded in December than in the summer months.

But it comes down to what you would personally find unbearable heat.
