SPAIN - Granada & Malage

We have decided on short notice to do a loop in Spain over New Years -- into Madrid and home from Malage. Trying to manage the departure from Malage airport around 2:30pm which means we need to be there no later than noon. Will be in Granada the previous days. The RS Spain guidebook suggests a two hour bus ride to Malage and about an hour bus to the airport. Does anyone know if there is a direct connection from Granada to Malage airport? How about a car/taxi directly to the airport. Cost? We have thought over-night in Malage but it does not appear to be that exciting. Any other suggestions???

Why not just fly out of Granada? You will have to change planes in either case. It may mean one more connection (depending on your connecting flight out of Malaga), but that seems like a fair trade off to avoid the hassel of trying to get from Granada to Malaga for a flight.

Frank....no direct link to Malaga airport, unfortunately. Buses from Granada to Malaga run at least once an hour for less than 10 Euro, and take about 2 hours for the run. Then it's either half an hour on the commuter bus to the airport (providing no traffic jams), or about 20 minutes on the train...the station is right next door to the bus station. For most car rentals, you may find you'll need a 3 day minimum. From Granada to Malaga airport, carjet.co.uk gives me a rate of about 50 Euro for the three days, plus whatever insurance you want. You might want to also reconsider staying the night before in Malaga. The old part of the city is really quite lovely, with a massive cathedral, lots of narrow streets, shops, and restaurant, some Roman ruins, a Muslim castle with wonderful views over the Med, a Picasso museum (he was born here....as was Antonio Banderas...altho no museum for him yet.) Despite what Rick may say, it's certainly worth a few hours there wandering around. The Ibis Ciudad De Malaga is only about 500 meters from the old town, and rates are under 70 Euro/night.

If you have already booked your flight arrangements, then I second Norm's suggestion...Malaga is an interesting stop...lots of history, friendly people, and good food (it hasn't been as compromised by tourists as the rest of the Costa del Sol).

Norm, that was our original thought to come from Granada and spend the afternoon and evening in Malage and then catch the train late the next morning to the airport. I tried to return from Granada but had to connect through Madrid or London. By the time we got there the return flights to US had departed and we would have to overnight there. Malage has a direct Delta flight to New York leaving about 2:30 pm and into Denver by 10 - very convenient. Your description of Malage may encourage us to go back to the original plan. Thanks for the response.
