Does anyone know if you really need the International Drivers license in Spain? Any suggestions are welcomed!
Yes, it is required.
And even if it wasn't, you would want to have a translation of your license into Spanish "just in case", since that what the IDP is.
Okay - thanks so much!!!!
I am not sure it is required - we certainly hired a car without one when we were in Spain a few months before we moved there - without any problems. My understanding is that you need to have a valid and current drivers license.
There are two issues, aren't there? You may be able to get the rental car from the guy or girl behind the desk but you may also run into a policeman or woman or have an accident and have to give details to the other person. Probably not, but if you do they will need it, so you will need it. What happens if you don't carry your license in Colorado? Nothing, until you need to show it to somebody. Same thing.
Thanks, everyone. I agree. I only asked because an earlier post had mentioned that they hadn't needed it. My husband will get one but was wondering if someone could "relieve" him driving once in a while who didn't have it. Guess it's the same issue - only if he doesn't get stopped.
You might want to check with the rental outfit about a second driver. Often you pay through the nose to stick another person on - - we don't usually do it because of the expense
