I am travelling with a girlfriend (2 women in our 50's) and my 23 year old son from Madrid to Paris for 2.5 weeks in September. We are hiring a car and planning to go via Avila and Salamca to Oporto and up the coast. What are the suggested towns to actually stay in overnight and make the base for other discoveries. We would prefer to have 2 nights at a time if possible. Any suggestions about the places to visit on the French side leading up to Paris?
Also, looking for a small, clean, character filled cheap hotel in Paris around the Montmartre or St Germain Des Pres. About max Eu 80 for a twin room with shower. Any suggestions?
