Looking to find some quaint German towns to visit in southwest Germany to visit. We will be in Munich for Oktoberfest for three days and will probably need a break from the crowds. Any suggestions?
Southwest Germany? Some people use that to mean the area around Köln. For others it's the south end of Baden-Württemberg. Me, I would prefer SW Bavaria, the area around Füssen west and south to Lindau, on the Bodensee. I am particularly fond of the area called the Oberallgäu, around the ski resort of Oberstdorf and the Austrian Kleinwalsertal. Another place I'm fond of is Pfronten, in Germany, just a little west of Reutte, about a half hour bus trip from Füssen.
Bavaria is SE Germany, Baden-Württemberg is SW. In the SW the Lake of Constance and Black Forrest come to mind. My recommendation for an easy trip from Munich: Train to Lindau, then boat to Friedrichshafen, stay over at Friedrichshafen, if interested visit the Dornier and Zeppelin museums or enjoy the beach club and board walk cafes and spectacular view of the Swiss Alps. The lake is 8.75 miles wide from this board walk which is the exact same distance as it is from Europe to Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar.
