We are planning a trip to Spain flying into Malaga and touring the sights in the south of Spain like Nerja, Tarifa, Granada, Sevilla, maybe Arcos before heading to Madrid and Toledo and finally to Barcelona where we plan to have our two 15year old grand-daughters meet us. We are young 70 year old's and are able to walk everywhere. We are not looking for beaches to lie on but do love the views.
We will be leaving the states in May and meeting our grand-daughters in mid June. Will it be to hot to walk many places. We live in Dallas but do not venture out in the heat much(i.e. 95 to 100 degrees).
At that time of year it will be warm but not as hot as it gets in Dallas. This week in Madrid its in the mid to upper 80s, Barcelona in the 70s. And remember that in Spain its common to take siesta during the hottest part of the day. The museums etc will be open (and climate controlled) but many shops close; if you find the heat oppressive you can relax in a cafe or return to your hotel until it cools down a bit.
We were in the area late April and it was pretty cold (hail in Jerez, snowing in the mountains near Granada) - still hadn't come out of a very cold winter in Europe. May should be decent, either nice or hot, probably not much chance of being cold. While it may get hot, it shouldn't be oppressive like July and August. Our highlights in the area: Granada, both the Alhambra and Sambra dance performance in a cave on Sacramonte. Ronda, we chose this over Arcos. We liked the stairs down to the river and some great views from the bridge, also toured the Plaza del Toro there. Antequera, they have dolmen there that are up to 20,000 years old (and free). Gibraltar, if you haven't been, why not spend a day in England? Tarifa, we liked the town. They seem to be doing a lot of restoration of walls, etc. - it's much more charming and has better cafe/restaurant choices than I would have expected. Jerez, we took two Bodega tours that were worthwhile. I posted a trip report here, "Spain: Clean bathrooms, affordable lodging" if you're interested.
I was in the area in mid-May. Two of the days we were there (Sevilla and Cordoba) it was 100 degrees or over. They told us it was unusually warm for that time of year, but those are common temps in the summer. Whether you get uncommon heat or cold when you go, you just can't guess.
Thanks for the information. I didn't mention we will be doing trains and buses. We will not have a car. Brad, how do I get to your post an Spain?
We had considered flying into Lisbon and then to Sevilla, but we thought that was taking too big a bite for our first trip to that area. We assume we will return, like Rick says.
Hi, if flying into Malaga you can travel to Malaga city by train from the airport .it is only a 12 minute journey.
You buy tickets before getting on the train.Once in Malaga which is a lovely city you can easily take the train to Cordoba and Seville .The rail network in Spain {RENFE} is good , especiallly compared to the UK .We did a week trip in march 2011 to the above mentioned places and found it to be really inexpensive to travel around.
