Hi. We're visiting Southern Germany in early May with the following tenative itinerary. Would greatly appreciate any feedback/suggestions re feasibility, accomodations railpasses etc. Thank you! Day 1 Fly to FRA Day 2 Arrive FRA train to Cochem stay Cochem Day 3 Cochem/Burg Eltz stay Cochem Day 4 Train to Rothenburg stay Rothenburg Day 5 Rothenburg stay Rothenburg Day 6 Train to Munich stay Munich Day 7 Munich stay Munich Day 8 Munich stay Munich Day 9 Train to Salzburg stay Salzburg Day 10 Salzburg/Berchtesgaden stay Salzburg Day 11 Train to Munich Drive to Garmisch stay Garmisch Day 12 Garmisch/Neuschwanstein stay Garmisch Day 13 Drive to Freiburg stay Freiburg Day 14 Freiburg late train to Zurich stay Zurich Day 15 Fly home from Zurich Concerned about drive Garmisch to Freiburg in one day.
Intermediate stops? Dropping car in Freiburg and late train to Zurich any issues? Your input/suggestions greatly appreciated! Also any/all suggestions for accomodations, "must sees" along the way Thank you!!
Looks good mostly. But I don't see the point of going out of your way to visit Freiburg, really, for such a short time, or for doing it by car, which makes it an even more costly trip, or for using the car to get to Garmisch from Munich, which is well served by train. In place of Freiburg, I think I would add a day to Cochem before Rothenburg. Your first day probably won't involve much sightseeing, and on Day 2 Burg Eltz will require a good part of your day. Do a daytrip to Trier, Germany's oldest city, or to fabulous Bernkastel, or bike along the Mosel, or stay in Cochem and see Reichsburg Castle (terrific free-flight falconry show there!) or head over to the Rhine to see Marksburg (in Braubach, 12 min. out of Koblenz by train.) Lots of great choices. http://www.falknerei-reichsburg-cochem.de/fotobuch.htm Then from Garmisch head straight to Zürich. I'm seeing tickets in May for 39€, 59€, and 79€ for this trip (advance-sale savings price at www.bahn.de)
There really isn't that much in Freiberg to warrant going out of the way like that. Stop in Meersburg or Lindau along Lake Constance. Great castle, beautiful scenery.
I agree with Kathy. Freiburg was nothing special, but we really enjoyed Lindau!
Do you mean Freiburg im Breisgau, or do you mean Freiberg am Neckar, or do you mean Fribourg in Switzerland? I imagine that you do mean the first one. If so, the gutters are nice. A few km south west is a really nice mineral spa, one of the very best we have ever enjoyed.
Thanks for all your help. Russ, Great recommendation for the falconry demo in Cochem, we will definately add to our to do list. Kathy, Deanna and Nigel thanks for feedback on Freiburg, we will avoid and base in Lindau instead. We do want to do some driving in the area and hoped to get some sense of the Black Forest. Looking into taking the train from Salzburg to Garmisch, picking up a car to explore castles, Mittenwald before heading to Lindau.
Appreciate your sharing your expertise/experiences.
