Southern Germany in November with a 4 year old

We will be in Southern Germany for my husband's job(roughly 1.5 hour south of Stuttgart, 1 hour west of Ulm and 1 hour hour north of Zurich) the month of November. We would like to take weekend trips to sight see. We plan to do the Christmas Market in Munich the last weekend in November. Any other suggestions? We have never been to Germany before. I would also like to take my 4 year old on day trips around the area. Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Take the little one to a cuckoo clock store. Yes, they're touristy, but what kid wouldn't be fascinated?

Can you be more exact? Sounds to me like you are going to be around Villingen. Near there is a castle, Sigmaringen. He might enjoy seeing that.

Are you near Tubingen? The area is the Neckar river valley which is beautiful. Tubingen is an old university town. There are castles. I wonder how far it would be to the Boden See. Stuttgart itself is probably worth some visits. It's not in a lot of the tour books so you'll need to look online, but I bet there's some interesting museums for German Children which your child would enjoy. I've heard that Ulm is quite nice. So I would check it out. The area around Reutlingen and east is the Schwabishe Alb. This is a beautiful area with lots of walks. I think that the weather may allow you to do some walks. Can you hook up with some people from your husband's company? I bet there's some wonderful things you can do very locally that none of us will know about because it's all written in German. You might search for you local town on Google and then email the town with your query. Even in English they sometime can refer you to something local. It's beautiful countryside. I revisited briefly last summer and realized that I hadn't appreciated at age 19,

Our daughter was born in Germany and lived there til she was about 3. We were lousy at predicting what she would like. She was indifferent to Legoland in Denmark. She could not care less about Neuschwanstein, but loved the long run down from it. She mainly liked singing songs in the car as we traveled, reading books, visiting duck ponds, going on short walks, and generally doing things that had nothing to do with being in Germany. She did think that it was neat that they painted on the ceiling in churches.

Your 4 year old will likely be a bigger hit with natives than you will be. That is the best part.

Regards, Gary

Make sure you spend time at the Lake of Constance. Sounds like you'd be near there... Must-see places are the baroque chruch of Birnau, the walled old-town of Meersburg incl. castle, the island-old-town of Lindau, Constance, where there once was a papal council held over years and of course all the smaller villages in between. If you want to know how the interiors of the Hindenburg zeppelin used to look and feel like you can find a replica of some of the rooms at the Zeppelin museum in the harbor of Friedrichshafen.
