Southern Germany in December

Hello All
My boyfriend and I are going to be be near Aalen Germany for 1 week. We were hoping to do some touring, but don't want to spend all our time on trains. We were told that Heidelburg was beautiful and of course, Rothenburg. Any suggestions on places with beautiful old town centers, good restaurants and wine bars, art galleries and of course castles?

Hi Joan,
I'm partial to Heidelberg because I had the opportunity to live there for 2 years. It has a beautiful old town that is over looked by many. The castle is gorgeous if there is snow, but I wasn't too fascinated by the inside. Your within a short distance (about 1 1/2 hrs) from Nuremberg which has some of the best christmas markets around. I would definitely look into going there. Have a great trip!!!

Just east of Aalen, over the border into Bavaria, is Nördlingen, one of the towns on the Romantic Road. It's similar to Rothenburg, in that it has an almost intact wall and a town center with fachwerk buildings and a church tower that you can climb, but much less touristy. South of Aalen, on the Danube, is the city of Ulm. It features the world's highest gothic church tower.

Schwäbisch Hall is very close to where you're staying. It's like Rothenburg with far fewer tourists and, in my opinion, in a prettier setting.
