south of France peid a terre

We are planning to spend 2 weeks in the south of France (cote d'Azur). We want to avoid Nice, Cannesm St Tropez type places. We have no real preference on where to stay, only that it is a nice town, near the beach and easy to get to by train (we have no car). We have been considering Frejus, Saint Raphael, Cap D'Agde. We are trying to keep it simple and cheap. Any recommendations much appreciated!

Try an apartment rental in Menton, reasonably priced compared to elsewhere. It has the advantage of a sandy beach, instead of a pebble one. Don't eliminate offhand Nice either, it's a very easy, cheap transportation hub, and the apartment rentals can be reasonably priced too. Try checking out a rental with: http://www.homeaway.com http://www.homeaway.co.uk http://www.abritel.fr http://www.holidaylettings.co.uk http://www.holiday-rentals.co.uk http://www.vrbo.com http://www.vacances.com
http://www.ihacom.co.uk For IHA, set to "Ireland" for English language with Euro pricing The listings vary slightly between the different national sites for Homeaway, for example: .com vs co.uk vs .fr I found prices to vary greatly from rental to rental and the "seasonality" of the pricing also varies greatly. Frankly, I shake my head at the outrageous prices asked for some. I found some excellent values by really checking out the listings carefully. Good luck!

Diane's suggestion of Menton is a good one. Friends of mine used to winter there every year until they got too old to travel. I've always liked the idea of "wintering" in the south of France. Sounds very Agatha Christie-ish.

Bonjour, I would recommend you Sanary/mer or places along the Provence Coast region - between Marseille and Toulon.
Beautiful beaches to swim, snorkel, historical sites, great foods and charming fishing harbors... Check more at http://ww.provence-coast-travel.com

Menton is an excellent suggestion for winter months as it has a micro-climate which keeps it warmer than the rest of the coast. In February there is the Lemon Festival. Not as warm as Menton in winter, Cassis is a nice place, convenient by train and with a beach.
