South of France in May

We only have a week to visit Provence and looking for an itinerary that will allow us to see the best the region has to offer. We'll be in Cannes for four days and looking to see more of the food/wine/cultural experience..we're both foodies and looking for a trip to remember. We'll be traveling by car and/or train. Your advice is greatly appreciated!

hi Kate,
first off, definitely get a car. Next, when I'm in Provence, I like to focus on the luberon.. Lacoste, rousillion, bonnieaux, st. Remy, lourmarin, gordes,. Cucuron, tons of wineries and stunning scenery. The Pont du gard is also worth seeing - take a picnic.

Kate...definitely agree with all the places posted by Darren. It is so wonderful to just hop in your car with a picnic and a map and take off exploring. There is always another spectacular place to visit around every corner. You really can't go wrong just wandering around the french countryside. If you want a longer drive there is also the Carmague with the pink flamingos and white horses and a great beach town.

Thank you for the ideas. What cities would you recommend in staying for a few days to experience all the region has to offer?

We found St Remy to be a perfect place to base(restaurants, laundry, market day) for seeing the area. Ile-sur-laSorgue would also be a good choice. Would not use the larger towns such as Arles and Avignon as a base. Parking can be a hassle in some towns. Enjoy your trip-we loved Provence.

I second the recomendation for St. Remy...we made it our home base on our last trip to Provence and we enjoyed it so much we returned after spending a week on the Cote d'Azur. There are a number of very good restaurants in St. Remy and of course you could travel to Les Beaux to see where Wolfgang Puck began his apprenticeship.
