South France

Hello, We are planning on going to South France in the beginning of July for 2 weeks. We would like to explore Provence and French Rivera. I am trying to find one central location to see everything from Avignon to Nice. Or would it be better to stay in two different locations? Thanks,
Tanya.

I would stay in at least two locations..Otherwise you will do a lot of driving back and forth on the same route.

I would stay in two or more places. you've got a lot of land to cover there, and while driving in Provence is beautiful, the roads are narrow, not well marked (GPS, anyone?) and can be stressful for some. You want to spend your time relaxing and visiting towns, not driving from point to point.

Pick two different places to stay. You don't want to spend all your time traveling back and forth.

Thank you all for your replies. I understand to explore the Rivera it is better to stay in Nice. Where would you recommend to stay to see the western part of Provence?

I do not care for staying in Nice if I have a car and want to explore... just lots of trouble getting in and out with your vehicle. I have stayed in a wonderful village of Gassin...quite small but lovely and near St. Tropez and the coast. As far as Provence... my all time favorite place to stay is St. Remy...very centrally located and a beautiful little town with restaurants, shopping and a fabulous market.
There is also a beach town on the Riviera called St. Maxime that I have stayed at a number of times. It has lots of offer and it is on the Sea.
