Sourthwest Germany Landstuhl, Daun, Mosel River

Forty years ago I was stations at Landstuhl. In September we are doing a tour in Italy that ends at Lake Como on Sep 13th and then on Sep 18th we join a tour in Frankfurt. Between the two tours we are on our own. We have been to Europe several times, but always with a group. We plan to take a train from Como to Mannheim and rent a car. Then spend a couple of nights in Landstuhl ( I hope to visit where I worked). I also want to vist the town of Daun for part of a day. We would like to get to Luxemburg (bucket list check off) and I would like to spend some time around the Mosel. When in the service I would just take off and drive into the country. I don't remember what roads any more. I just want to have my wife experience the rolling country side and small towns. Any suggestions?

Landstuhl is a straight shot west on the A6 from Mannheim. Its a fairly scenic drive from the main road. I'm not certain what the fastest route to Luxembourg City is from Landstuhl, but its probably A62 to A1 by Trier, then swing SW. Most of the scenery here is forest and mountains.

We were stationed in Mainz in the 70's and would do the same as youdrive into the country and find small towns with zimmers. Yes, some cities, like Mainz, have spread out a bit, but for the most part, it is the same beautiful countryside surrounding the cities. Do as you did then. Take the autobahn, but get off the beaten path here and there. You'll be surprised how it will all come back to you. The Mosel is a beautiful area to drive and stay in. Just don't get a zimmer close to the train tracks. Have a fun trip!

Would definitely recommend a night or two in Zell am Mosel. Lots of nice overnight places to stay there, and in fact a place owned by Frau Thiesen is really great and very centrally located in Zell. Lots of wine tasting to do in that town. Parking of course is usually problem in the small towns along the Mosel.

Would Zell make a good base for three days on and around the Mosel? We'll probably be coming from Luxemburg and when we leave we will be headed to Frankfurt? Would Beilstein or Cochem make a better base? Tom
