Hi! everyone! we will in Salzburg on May 22-24. basically we only have 1.5 day. we are fans of SOM as i was searching iv read a lot of negative reviews about the Sound of Music tours. it is expensive and most of the time just drive thru the locations. most of the locations are accessible by public transportations but the most important location i want to see is the famous "hills" - Hills are alive . does anyone know how to get there? thank you
Nannette, I didn't go looking for those locations when I was there but I found this info on Wikepedia, maybe you can research these place names and find out more. The opening scene and aerial shots were filmed in Anif (Anif Palace), Mondsee, and Salzkammergut (Fuschl am See, St. Gilgen and Saint Wolfgang). Otherwise, I'm sure someone here will chime in with that info.
If you stay at Der Salzburger Hof (www.dersalzburgerhof.at) you can watch the original Sound Of Music movie on the hotel's television. It is a continuous loop and if you're lucky you can hear it through the wall all night.
Actually, the opening scene, after the cloud shrouded mountain top, is looking down on the Königssee in Berchtesgaden, with the electric powered cruise boats.
Thanks for the good advice Monte, remind me never to stay there!
We did Bob's SOM tour. They take you in a small passenger van instead of the tour bus. We stopped in the relevant places and had plenty of time to look around and take pictures. One person in our group never saw the movie and wasn't interested, but had a good time anyway because the scenery is nice and you also stop for a ride on the "sommerrodelbahn."
I can't imagine that we would have seen all of the places or even recognized them if we'd done it ourselves with public transit.
i found this site. pretty good! we can do sound of music by ourselves but while i was reading it, we have decided to take the bike tour instead. look so much fun. http://www.bigboytravel.com/europe/austria/salzburg/soundofmusicfilmlocations
We were there in May 2012 and did Maria's Bike tour. 2 people in our group had never seen SOM and 2 of us had. All 4 had a wonderful time...don't need to be a fan to enjoy the countryside, sights and background that our guide provided. It was a highlight of our trip and we don't normally do organized tours, preferring to see sights on our own. Also, reservations weren't needed which was a huge benefit as the day we originally planned to do it was pouring rain. We went the next day instead and had a blast. Highly recommend it!
My husband and I were there about that same time in 2012. We did a "private tour" through viator.com. It was just us and the tour guide and well worth the money. He had much history of not jus SOM but of the city and area in general. He gave us great suggestions as to where to spend our afternoon after the tour was done. I would highly recommend this if you are unsure of getting around the city on your own like we were.
Sheri thanks. i think we are set to do the bike tour. altho, i really would love to visit that famous "hills" but none of the tour companies go there. i emailed them but they said its a private property and if we want to go there, we can rent a car and do it ourselves :( however, the bike tour will take us to different hills that almost look like the one in the movie. i guess thats good enough.
