My family and I are trying to see Mont. St. Michel then make it back to Paris in time to take a night train to Venice, Italy. The original plan was to stay a night in Bayeux, then go see Mont St. Michel in the morning. Now we are thinking it might be smart to stay somewhere closer, so there will be less travel time getting back to Paris, as we're thinking it would probably take a while to return the car, and get ready for the overnight train. I am wondering if anyone knows any good places to stay close to Mont-St-Michel, but not necessarily on it. There are 4 of us. Any help would be great!
Last April, we stayed at a charming B&B that Rick Steves recommends called "Les Vieilles Digues." It is perfectly located, just 1 1/2 miles from the entrance to Mt. Saint Michel. Danielle and Kin are perfect hosts, and we found our room charming and comfortable. Danielle gave us a great recommendation for dinner the evening we arrived, and was especially kind throughout our stay. We paid 94 euros for a triple room with breakfast. Their website address is www.bnb-normandy.com
Bon voyage :)
FYI - the hotels and restaurants across from Mont St. Michel are AWFUL. We just returned last weekend from a trip there and were so disappointed. I HIGHLY recommend staying away from the tacky, touristy "commune" area close to the causeway to Mont St. Michel. Please trust me on this!
We stayed at Le Château de Boucéel
This chateau is located about 15 min from Mt. St. Michel. The owner is an actual Count, whose family owned the chateau for generations.
Stay someplace ON Mt. Saint Michel. Sure, you'll pay for it, but then you get to actually be there when all the crowds leave, and that's when the place is just magical. After the hoards have left for the night, late night and early morning, it's a completely different experience - IMHO well worth the premium you pay for staying on the Mont itself.
I agree with David 100%!
I would also recommend staying on the Mont--as others said, it is wonderful when the crowds leave. But if this does not work out for you there is the little town of Avranches which is not far from the Mont. We stopped there for lunch and found it to be a charming town perched up on a hill.
might be best just to take a coach/bus tour from Paris. lv the logistics to some one else then take your train to Venice.
it is a long dive from Paris to Mont St M. when you do not know the area.
Another vote for Chateau de Bouceel which we enjoyed. While I'm sure that it is nice to be on MSM at night, it is also nice to be away from it but drive over at night and see it with all the lights on .
Be sure to see the tapestry at Bayeux - it was one of the most memorable things we've ever seen. The audio guide is very helpful.
We stayed at Chateau de Sully . www.chateau-de-sully.com ..elegant with beautiful ground. It was close to Mont and all the WWII sites.
