solo woman in Spain - safe at night?

I'm a 50 year old woman traveling solo to Spain this October. I've read a lot about the late dining times and the late night activity on the streets of Barcelona and Madrid. I'm not looking to go to dance clubs, but do you think I'm safe going for tapas at 10 pm or strolling the main streets at night? I'm staying on La Ramblas in Barcelona and Gran Via in Madrid.

Yes is the short answer. The areas you are staying in will be crowded and busy well into the early hours. However, they are a bit of a haven for pickpockets etc, especially Las Ramblas, but this applies to all day. I would feel quite safe walking in most parts of any Spanish city late at night, mainly as people are out so late - but the spanish are also not aggressive or dangerous, in general.

YES. You are safe. I haven't been to Barcelona, but have been in Madrid and on the Gran Via - pretty late at night. No worries. If you happen to take a wrong turn and find yourself off the main drag, or on a quieter street where you feel uneasy, just keep your head up, look confident, and backtrack until you're again on a busy street, surrounded by people. And yes, watch your purse - but also watch your purse at 7:00am and at noon!

If you are staying on La Ramblas, it is busy until the wee hours. Would not go down a side street by myself but I wouldn't do that any place if I don't feel comfortable at night. Just stay on the main drag. I felt it was very safe and I was also on my own.
