solo week in barcelona--itinerary?

I will be in Barcelona for one week this coming August and am trying to put together an itinerary--I know that in many cities/countries, certain days are not good for certain things, and that some places stay open late and/or close early on certain days of the week. i particularly appreciate the pages dedicated to this topic in the Rick Steves books--i have both the Paris and London books and that section has been the most helpful in my trip planning. Sadly, there is no Rick Steves Barcelona book (though I've checked out the Barcelona section in his Spain book) SO...basically what I'm looking for is advice on when to do what--or, maybe even more importantly, when to NOT do what. i'm traveling on my own and so don't really want to have a lot of down time.

my travel plans are as follows: arrive in Barcelona around 3:00 on a monday. leave barcelona early in the morning the FOLLOWING monday. so i have six full days, tuesday through sunday to plan. i'd like to get in at least two trips out of the city (i'm thinking montserrat and maybe a beach town near by).

From personal experience I would recommend against visiting Parc Güell on a Sunday unless you wanted to personally meet almost every resident in Barcelona.

In other news, Rick started publishing "Snapshot" guides and has one on just Barcelona (available for sale on this site under Travel Store > Guidebooks > Spain, Portugal, Morocco). I do not speak from experience here, having never seen it in person (but I have used the Barcelona section of the Spain book and it was, as usual, pretty good).

Tracy, there IS a RS Barcelona book, tho it might just be all the stuff in his Spain book. I just bought it from this site and I think it was $9. I briefly looked through it, I haven't been yet, but I was thinking Montserrat too.

Hi Tracy- If you are looking for an interesting trip to take out of Barcelona you should go to Girona. It is easy to get there by train. About an hour from Barcelona. Girona reminded me a lot of Florence with the river running through it and the houses "hanging" over it. Interesting streets to wander and lots to see. Make a day of it. I have been in Barcelona several times by myself and never tire of it. Break your days up into sections of the city making it easier to see everything and not backtracking. This is a wonderful city for walking and exploring. Be cautious of pickpockets in the crowded areas. Montserrat is awesome!! I loved climbing the trails and looking over the beautiful mountain views. Take a packed lunch and sit on a rock and take it all in. Figueres is also an interesting place to visit if you love Dali. The museum is one of the best but the town really doesn't have much else.

If you want anymore Barcelona tips just let me know and I can fill you in on my very favorite place!!!
