Am contemplating a trip in mid June to Germany and wanted to include a few days in Salzburg. Was wondering if anyone has found that the soccer event is having any effect on the availability of rooms and/or the cost. If so, should I consider dropping Salzburg? Also, it might be as late as early March before anything would be booked. Thanks! Ashley
That "soccer event" is called Eurocup and it's about football (don't call it soccer anywhere outside the US!) and is one of the top 3 largest events in the world (Football worldcup, Summer Olympics, Football Eurocup). Don't expect to find any cheap accommodation in the Salzburg area around match days. Check with www.euro2008.com!
Actually it's called Euro 2008, which is short for the European Championships. The European Cup is another competition entirely, and no one cares about football in the summer Olympics.
Anyway, Salzburg will only be hosting games on June 10, 14, 18. If you avoid those dates I imagine you'll be okay as far as finding hotels filled. But I don't know why you'd want to miss all the fun -- there will be plenty of public viewing areas (most likely) and pubs (definitely) filled with quite a celebration on those nights.
You can find the schedule here, among other places: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euro_2008#Group_stage
Thanks for the input. I think we will change destinations and save this trip for another time. It seems that there will be games in Salzburg, Vienna, and Innsbruck throughout the time we would be there. Ashley
