My wife and I love Murren in the Lauterbrunnen Valley area of Switzerland. But this summer we're headed to Austria. We are thinking of spending some time in the Innsbruck area, going hiking, etc. Does anybody know of a town somewhat like Murren in that area that we might use as our "home base"? Or is it better to simply stay in Innsbruck while in that region?
Innsbruck is actually pretty compact and is very easy to use as a base. However, if you are looking for a smaller place nearby... http://www.tyrol.tl/en/tyrols-holiday-areas/innsbruck-and-surroundings/aldrans.html
Hall is another place I was thinking of. http://www.tyrol.tl/en/tyrols-holiday-areas/innsbruck-and-surroundings/hall-in-tirol.html
While we enjoyed spending time in Hall, we really loved the Achensee area not far from Innsbruck. We stayed in tiny Maurach but the town of Pertisau is a little larger. Both are located on Achensee with beautiful views of the mountains. There are several chairlifts that you can take from Pertisau and Maurach up to the top of the mountains for hiking or just to watch the hang gliders. http://achensee.info/en/
Lech is a great town you would like if you liked Lauterbrunnen Valley.
Agree about Lech. It is fantastic and the hiking is excellent. If you stay there you get the free Lech Card which gives you free access to all the lifts, gondolas, and hiking buses. Pension Juliana is where we stayed...Claudia and her family are wonderful hosts.
it si nothing like Muerren, but Seefeld in Tirol is very nice, up the cliff above Innsbruck. There is no such thing as a one size fits all holiday, but my wife and I found nothing special about Innsbruck. if you want to be able to do hikes in the mountains get up into the Tyrlian mountains.
Are you driving or going by train?
It's nowhere near Innsbruck and it's a Rick favorite, but I'm going to have to go with Hallstatt. No, it doesn't have all of the hiking options & the mountains aren't as impressive, but the way they rise up from the lake is beautiful. The town itself is also quite lovely. I loved Chalet Fontana and the general peace and quiet of Mürren, and you'll get the same feeling in Hallstatt. You can tour the salt mine, see the bone chapel, and explore other areas around all of those lakes in the region.
Hi Bob, I'd suggest the Zillertal. We stayed in Finkenberg overlooking Mayrhofen. Stunning valley. http://www.worldisround.com/articles/355538/index.html http://www.gaestehaus-bergland.at http://www.zillertal.at/en/summer/home Paul
We are taking the train (in response to a question above).
