My husband and I are looking for a small family run city hotel/pension/guesthouse in Wurzburg preferably in the city centre. Close to the river would be good.
I think one of the places recommended by Rick in Würzburg is Pension Spehnkuch.
I stayed there last October, and it was fine. It is run by a man and his "wife" (S.O., whatever). They were friendly and helpful. And, if it matters, their English is excellant. It is just a block from the Hauptbahnhof.
It is a short walking distance from the Residenz (ho-hum) and you can catch the streetcar to Marienburg at the Hbf.
It does not have Dusche/WC in the room; that is down the hall, but I didn't find that to be a problem - clean and never a wait. The price is right. And, they have free Wifi.
Thank you for your promt reply. At our age, I think we need to have an en suite bathroom though.
We stayed at the Hotel Straus(s) on Juliuspromenade. It was about €80.00 for a double without breakfast. It is very close to the river. Lots of restaurants/cafes on the street.
We stayed at two small hotels in Würzburg that were near the pedestrian zone; both were Rick's recommendations.
The Hotel St. Josef is family run, has an excellent breakfast and a good restaurant. It is a block off the pedestrian zone, 10 min from the train station.
We also stayed at the Hotel Barbarossa. It is privately owned but I think not family run. It has a decent breakfast with a nice view over the roof tops of the Vineyards that surround the town. The rooms are smallish but recently remodeled. It is a bit closer to the rail station and at the edge of the pedestrian zone. It is on the top floor of a building and has an elevator. We are returning there in December.

Neither is close to the river.

This looked like a great website to find B&Bs all over Germany. Hope this helps.
We stayed at the Hotel Straus last Tuesday in Wurzburg, since this was our last night of travel we upgraded to a bigger room and it was very nice. Breakfast was included and it was very nice as well. Wurzburg is a great city and this hotel is close enough to walk to almost everything.
The Hotel Waldfisch is right on the quai along the river. No idea of cost. Members of our family have stayed at the Hotel Regina near the bahnhof and liked it.
Good to stay in a place with breakfast icluded if you are a coffee drinker. Coffee was more than 4 euros for a small pot last time we were in Wurzburg.
In July we stayed at Pension Spehnkuch in Rs guidebk. Everything was as stated in guidebk. I would stay there again. parking, ease to central city , great comfort and brfast for a great rate.
Thank you all very much for your interest and advise. We are going to book the Hotel St Josef.
