Does anyone have any suggestions on castles in Germany where you can spend the night? When I was in college, I stayed at the great castle hostel in Bacharach on the Rhine. Now that I'm older, I would like to to try other castles, preferably in central Germany or Bavaria. Thanks.
We stayed at Castle Schoenburg. Beautiful views of the river. Nice room in the old tower. Decent restaurant. Very expensive. Glad I can say I did it, not sure I'd do it again. http://www.hotel-schoenburg.com/
Here's two that I know of, but never stayed in either. First, Schloßhotel Hirschhorn, upriver from Heidelberg in the Neckar valley: http://www.schlosshotel-hirschhorn.de/ Second, Schloß Büdingen, north of Frankfurt: http://www.schloss-buedingen.de/index.php?q=startseite.html
Also stayed in Castle Shoenburg (just one night) on my first trip to Europe. Was very expensive but so glad we did it as well! (stayed in the castle hostel in Bacharach on the same trip...what a difference!).
There are actually lots of castle hotels dotted around Germany. One Europe vacation we spent nights in several castle hotels. http://www.german-castles.biz/
We also stayed at Castle Schoenburg and loved it. Had a beautiful room overlooking the Rhein and the dinner was excellent. Champagne was offered at breakfast. It was an October trip and log fires were burning throughout the castle. It was fairly expensive but worth the splurge-an occasion to create fond travel memories for sure.
If you're going to Heidelberg, which I strongly recommend, then by all means stay at Schloss Hirschorn (which Tom also recommended). My wife and I stayed there and loved it. It's an old castle that has been completely modernized inside. Our room overlooked the river and one of the locks and we had dinner on the terrace that evening. The staff was very gracious and the food was great.
