Sleeping In Avignon

Would anyone have any recommendations for staying in Avignon? I have read that it is noisy and perhaps 'not safe' near Place de l'Horloge, I will be a solo traveller so I'd like to err on the side of caution.

Thanks so much!

Hi Joanne: I'm a bit curious where you read that? We haven't had any reports here of that area being unsafe. In fact, out of the 12 accommodations Rick lists in his book, Provence & Riviera, half of those are near Place de l'Horloge. However, if you still have safety concerns about that area, is there some reason why you must stay near Place de l'Horloge?

I was reading a review of Hotel de Blauvac on Trip Advisor and the reviewer (from last August) indicated that staying outside Avignon is 'cleaner, safer & quieter', I did have my heart set on staying right near Place de l'Horloge so perhaps I should carry on & find a great hotel/pension in the area (I was looking at Hotel Mignon).

Thanks kindly!

I'll help you find a hotel. You can reply here, or send a Private Message, giving your preferences and maximum cost per day. And I'll reply with some suggestions near Place de l'Horloge.

Thanks kindly Kent!
I am a 'pension' kind of girl, small, cozy, family run, doesn't need to be fancy but clean.. friendly staff where I can practise my French!
Anywhere round $100 Canadian is fine (bout 60-70 euros)

I stayed at Hotel du Parc in Avignon a couple of times. It is small, super neat, and close to the train station and other areas of interest. The tourist area of Avignon is fairly small and quite walkable wherever you stay inside the walls.

I stayed (solo) at Hotel Mignon for Christmas 2008 (just a month ago). I found the area near Place de l'Horlage charming, and Hotel Mignon is only 3 blocks away (a great location). If you stay to the lit, main streets at night, I found Avignon fine for walking out to dinner and back; it probably has more traffic in warmer time. Further down the main street, towards the train station, there were more homeless/drunk-appearing people at night, but not a huge amount. Good luck!
