Skiing Zugspitze

We will be in Bavaria next week. Any suggestions on where to stay or how to get to ski areas on the Zugspitze. we will be there 1 day, just to snowboard. We will have a rental car. Been to their website, still not sure. Any help Andreas? Kent, I searched in the upper right without much luck.

Well, the good news are: Plenty of snow available. But it took them at surprise and they're not really ready to open for skiers yet. Generally speaking very good skiing areas are www.oberstdorf.de, www.tannheimertal.com (Austrian side of Füssen/Neuschwanstein) and of course Mt. Zugspitze. Unfortunately the latter one won't open for skiers until Dec 1st. www.skiarlberg.at also don't start until the last weekend of november. Mt. Kitzsteinhorn, about 1 hour south of Salzburg in the Austrian alps is open already: http://www.kitzsteinhorn.at/ As far as I'm aware you can take a train to "Zell am See" and then there are bus shuttles to the gondolas...(for trains: www.bahn.de)

You can get a pass at Garmisch Patenkirken (spelling?) and ski the whole area, three mountains including the Zugspitze. I would think your best bet is to take the train into Garmisch, especially if you fly into Munich. At the main Garmisch ski area, there are buses that take you to the Zugspitze. There are two ways to get to the ski area, by tram or cable car. There is a lift to the peak of the Zugspite marked by a cross. If you ski down, keep an eye out for some of my gear. I slid face down about 200 yds a few years ago and some of my stuff may still be buried.
