Although Chamonix is one of the oldest skiing resorts in the world it's not like all those cosy Alpine resorts. You can't ski right from the town's center. You always need to take a bus to the actual lifts (30-60 mins bus ride). Since the runs are all up in the mountains it's snow-proof until late April. However, if you're looking for a typical Alpine skiing resort with wooden houses and huts, Apres-Ski parties etc. you might want to prefer Austria or Switzerland. If proximity to Geneva is what you're looking for then try the Portes du Soleil skiing resort. It's huge and spreads across French and Swiss territory - but it's not as high in altitude as Mt. Blanc.
