Does the Eurail pass cover travel to Les 3 Vallees, France, Verbier, Switzerland, and Alrberg, Austria? We are traveling to ski these resorts in early February and trying to figure out the best options for getting there. We are flying into Geneva, going to Les 3 Vallees, then to Verbier, then to Arlberg, Austria and flying out of Munich. We are hoping to use a Eurail Pass to travel. Will this work for our trip? This is my first trip to Europe, and I am having trouble figuring out when trains and busses are not covered by Eurail. We'd appreciate any info! Thanks!
It covers but it is extremely unlikely you will benefit, financially, form Eurail passes on these routes!
You don't mention where in Arlberg, but if it's Lech or Zürs, there's no rail access for either.
Agree with the above poster, there's almost no chance a Eurail pass is going to be economical for what you have proposed.
A Rail pass will not pay off. I assume you want to spend your vacation skiing and not riding the rails.
The best way from Geneva airport to 3 Vallees is by bus. There is a fleet of buses at the airport going to all the ski resorts. The problem is finding which of the 30 odd busses is going to where you want to go.
3 Vallees to Verbier is a torturous 8 hour journey with 5 or 6 connections, with at least one of these a bus. A bit of research should find a bus or van connection in a couple of hours.
Verbier to St Anton am Arlberg is 7 hours with 4 connections if you count the gondola ride down from Verbier to Le Chable. Change trains at Martigny, Lausanne, Zurich. The train station is right in St Anton.
St Anton to Munich can be done in 4 hours with a single change at Innsbruck, and the advance purchase (nonrefundable) price is 19 euro.
So I see only 2 train trips, one of them dirt cheap. Let me guess. Epic Pass.
PS. The Le Chable to St Anton leg can be done for 58 Swiss Francs ($65) advance purchase non refundable.
I think it would be incredibly difficult to get to all of these ski areas via Eurail Pass and not worth the effort. Save yourself time and aggravation and just rent a car!
We were in the area of Verbier for several weeks this summer and I can't imagine trying to reach this resort by public transport. If you must, you can take a train to Martigny and then change trains to take the St. Bernard Express to Le Châble. From there you can take the cable car or the Postal Bus to get up to Verbier. With luggage??? Not at all convenient; bit of a nightmare if you ask me. Once there you will spend a lot of money on cabs depending on where you choose to stay...get ready to spend lots of $$$ here...it's one of the most expensive places I have every spent time!
Again, just rent a car...your time is worth a lot!
Thanks, everyone, for the information. It seems pretty clear from your replies that getting an Eurail Pass doesn't make sense. We do have an Epic Pass (good guess, Sam!;). Although we are planning on traveling to areas of Switzerland and Austria outside of the resorts, I still think your advice to book individual tickets or rent a car makes sense.
Cheers.
How many in your group? Renting a car at Geneva airport (Swiss sector) makes a lot of sense. The transfer from 3 Vallees to Verbier would be way easier. 3 hours verses 6 or so via bus and train, and that ticket would be the priciest. If the weather permits, make a stop in Chamonix and do the Vallee Blanche run from the top of the Aiguille du Midi. You'll never forget it! Hire a guide so you don't end up in a crevasse.
As long as you got wheels, drive it to Zurich and you can drop it at the airport (no huge "foreign" drop off fees). There is a train station right at the airport, and after a short train ride to Zurich Hbf, you can hop the Railjet to St Anton (29 chf advance purchase). The St Anton station is right next to the center of town. Easy transfer to Munich via Innsbruck.
I'll be in St Anton on Saturday. I'll let you know.
