I visited Zermatt last December on a brief trip and I was with someone who didn't ski so I didn't go ,unfortunately.
Anyhow Zermatt does not allow any cars in the town. The vehicles are these tiny electric cars that pick you up at the train station and takes you to your hotel. Oh, also note that if you take the train, the portion from Visp to Zermatt is considered private and you have to pay extra (i.e. a train pass only gets you a discount).
The town is very high end (think Aspen) with amazing views. Lots of night life. http://www.frommers.com/destinations/zermatt/0164010030.html
Personally I wouldn't want the hassle of carrying my own equipment so I'd rent them. English is widely spoken so you won't have any trouble. Just bring plenty of $$$.
I stayed at a midrange place called Hotel Bristol.

Clean, efficient and a good location. If you have the money you can stay at some spectacular hotels. The trip is worthwhile just to see the Matterhorn.

I stayed in summer there once, Hotel Atlanta. Thought it was great.

I'm sure you could find info on skiing there on the Europe forum at epicski.com.

Bringing ski gear depends mostly on your skiing ability. I ski so poorly there is no reason for me even to tote my boots. My husband on the other hand, would want is performance gear. However, he would only bring his custom boots and rent skis. As for Zermatt, I have not skied there, but have from Murren and from Castelrotto. The later was better, but it just could have been too warm in Murren and the snow was slush. Enjoy your trip J
