Skiing in Summer

Hi all, My wife and I are traveling to Europe in June 2012 and I am wondering if there is anywhere that offers summer skiing. I have looked at Zermatt and it seems to be the only place that may offer this.....does anyone have any experience or suggestions? Thanks in advance! Brett

I've looked this up as well, and Zermatt is the only place I've read that offers it... but I haven't found any concrete information, or references from people who have actually done it. The Mount Blanc massif is the highest point in Western Europe west of the Caucuses. If June skiing exists anywhere else besides Zermatt, this would be the place. The ski season has occassionally bled into early June on top of the Zugspitze, but more commonly, it ends in May.

Brett, I have skiied in Zermatt in summer and had a great time. It was in May, but toward the very end of the month. It was great; as would be expected, very mild conditions (although, on the 1st day, it ended up being colder than we expected!); and except for 1 unusually colder day, we just wore very light shells. At that time of year, of course there won't be any snow on the ground in the village, but then you take the cable car up to the base mountain, and there is snow, mild and enjoyable conditions, etc. Skiing with views of the Matterhorn; pretty amazing memories I have of this. The village is very pretty and enjoyable; it's car-free, so you leave your car in the town before Zermatt (town called Tosh, if I recall) then take the train into Zermatt. The streets are pedestrian-friendly; only "cars" you'll see are small, electric "taxis" that ferry people from the train stattion to the hotels. The village is small and very easy to navigate by foot, If you're looking for a hotel, try Hotel Romantica: http://www.hotels.com/ho213694/hotel-romantica-zermatt-switzerland/#description It's small, family owned, very comfortable and clean (in that typical swiss way!). It's also pretty reasoanble, which is a good thing in Zermatt; it's VERY expensive. Prepare for some sticker shock while there. Hope this info helps. If you end up there, have a fantastic time.

Hi Tom, Thanks for your reply. We trekked Mont Blanc last year in September but only the peaks were covered with snow. It was worth a shot but I have a feeling summer skiing may not be possible. Thanks anyway! Brett
