Dear Travelers, I am looking into setting up a SKI trip, and I have the optionof going to Austia, Switzerland or South Lake Tahoe !. HELP !!! My Austria and Swiss options are inlate March ( March 26 ). I was concerned that perhaps the snow may be melting by then. Is that an issue ? Late Taho, on the other hand, is March 6. So I thknk the snow is till good ( is it ?? ) I looked up the Austia and Swiss resorts, and they do not show up on the popular lists. That is another concern. In Austria, I have the option of going to 'Siesta Ferienclub Scarnitz (Mondi)". It is in the resort town of Scharnitz. From what I can gather, there is only one ski lift in the village, and not much out there ! In Switzerland, I have two options : 1) A resort in Torgon. It seems to be within 'Les Portes Du Soleil' ski area. I could not find much on it, but maybe my search mistakes ( rather than lack of information ! ). http://www.lescretes.ch/EN/Default.htm ( La Jorette , Torgon, CH-1899 ) 2) The second option is in the 'Les Diablerets' village. The resort description calls it a 'small mountain village'. Not sure if there is good skiinig in Late March Résidence Diablerets - Parc A Route du Pillon Les Diablerets, CH-1865 Switzerland www.multilocation.ch 3) My third option is South Lake Tahoe, near the 'Heavenly' ski area. Any advice you may have is greatly appreciated. Thanks
Ray
Nobody knows about the weather these days. There's a something called global warming. Did you watch the skiing from Wengen last weekend? Did you see the spectators sitting on the grass and rocks, not on snow? They also announced that several events in Italy had been cancelled, no snow. Maybe lots more snow will arrive. Maybe not. Maybe what's down will melt as late in the season as March and April. I'd bet it might. Yet I've been a few years ago where there was plenty of snow in July. Who knows? You may be more successful in Austria. What's the forecast for Tahoe?
These sound like RCI timeshare options? I think Tahoe is your best bet, unless you particularly want the experience of skiing in the Alps (and take a chance on the snow). At that time of year, it is all about altitude. You want to be as high as possible. If I recall correctly, Scharnitz is not at high altitude. Les Diablerets, in Switzerland, is quite high; the town is at only 1200 meters, but the top of the lift is at 3000 meters. So between those two, that would be the better choice. Heavenly at Lake Tahoe usually offers very good spriing skiing. The base is around 6500 feet and the top of the mountain is above 10,000. Lots of night life (but no charm at all) in nearly South Lake Tahoe. They have had LOTS of snow there so far this winter.
Thanks Nigel and Lola Yes, it is an RCI week ( and the choices are dwindling fast ! ). Thanks for the advice. Seeing the Alps is kind of nice, but the point is to have some great Skiing :) Perhaps is it now between Tahoe and Les Diablerets ! It does help to narrow it down to two :) Thanks all. Any more advice ? Has anyone skiied Lake Tahoe in March ??
I've skied at Tahoe (the north end) in March, and clear through April. That is where I learned to ski! Looks like Les Diablerets would be OK in late March; they have a glacier and the skiing up there is open to the end of May: http://www.diablerets.ch/index.php?aid=340 It's all a matter of whether you want to invest in air tickets all the way to Switzerland to go skiing. I keep thinking of the first time I skied at Whister and we stayed in a B&B run by a Swiss couple. They were guides and ski instructors in Switzerland and said the skiing was better in North America (and particularly at Whistler, in their opinion. Since the only time I tried skiing in Switzerland it was so icy I couldn't manage it, I respected their opinion. So as much as I love Switzerland (and go there as often as I can), I'd save it for hiking and stay here for skiing! RCI has lots of properties at Whistler and also in Utah (Snowbird is my favorite) in case you haven't been there already. And in Europe, you might also try the Dolomites. We used our RCI trade for a condo at Madonna di Campiglio once. It was a summer week, but that it a ski area too.
While most European ski resorts are closed or are on their very tail end, there is still some Glacier skiing at that time. This link is helpful. http://www.j2ski.com/ski_resorts/Switzerland/TopSwissSkiResorts.html
You can also sort the ski areas by country and it shows a map, perhaps there's a glacier area close to where you need to stay.
Thank you Lol for the great information. I think I am getting closer to a decision :)
