skiing in Austria

I am traveling to Austria in February for a ski trip and am staying in St. Johann Im Pongau at the Alpenland Hotel. I was wondering if its best to rent all of your ski equipment there (that's what I'm thinking) and has anyone skied that area before.

I haven´t skied in that particular area, but in general, renting equipment is about as easy as in the US. Personally, I would not want to hawl a pair of skis and boots all the way from the US. Of course, for the binding adjustments, just make sure you know your height and weight in the metric system!

Thanks for your reply. I think I will rent there. Not excited about carrying my ski equipment even though my boots are very comfortable, but not worth hauling all the way over there. Any suggestions of good ski areas south of Salzburg with more advanced skiing terrain?

Through a rock around Innsbruck and you´ll find what you´re looking for.

I skied in St Johann in Tirol as a kid years ago and it was great. I know it's not the same place you are going, but it is Austria after all, so anywhere you go is going to be worth the trip!

Flachau and Bad Gastein might suit you. Flachau, close to St. Johann, is where Herman Maier found his legs. Bad Gastein, a short distance south of St. Johann, hosts world cup races every year. As for bringing your own equipment - if skiing is your primary reason for visiting the area, then the price of lugging your own around might compensate for having the best possible experience on world class terrain.

Hmm. Good point! Skiing is the main reason I am coming to the Austrian Alps. Maybe I'll at least bring the boots. Thanks for all the comments and advice.

It's a beautiful village/town and you can just rent anything there - depending on weather conditions. I always rent skis to get the latest models and try different kinds of skis (carvers vs. regular vs. speed etc). The only thing I would think about is bringing your own skiing boots. Of course you can rent them as well and of course they're taking up a lot of luggage space but think about whether you want to wear a pair of boots for 6 hours per day that 50+ other people have worn before you...
