Ski Trip to Switzerland!

Hi Travel Addicts like me,

I'm planning a ski trip for February 2011, and also some sightseeing on the west side of Switzerland. All on public transportation, trains, buses, boats if necessary.
My usual accommodations are budget, safety, convenient, central, near stations,
as Rick's guide recommanded.

Here is my prelimanary points of interest for approximately 21 days on my own, dates are flexible:-

  1. Arriving at Zurich
  2. train to Luzern
  3. Interlaken
  4. Grindelwald
  5. Saas Fee
  6. Zermatt
  7. Lausanne(day trip to Geneve or Cruise)
  8. Bern
  9. Basel
  10. Return to Zurich Airport

The numbers indicates places I want to visit.
If this directions seemed unsmooth, I can travel the opposite direction, Zurich to Basel and so on.

Please give me ideas and suggestions for rail, bus and closes accommodations to ski resorts.

Thanks,
skibum Joy

Hi Helpline,

I got an email saying that,

"You have a new private message in your Helpline Inbox."

Where do I find the inbox?

Thanks,

To retrieve your messages, sign in and then look on the upper right corner---there will be a notice that you click on to go to your inbox.

As for your itinerary----Grindelwald, Saas Fee, and Zermatt all offer good skiing. But many of the hotels require a full week stay, so accommodation choices are limited if you staying for a shorter time.

As for rail pass, for 3 weeks to the places I am visiting, what type of rail pass should I buy?

Thank you Chris.

I know I will have to eliminate some of the places eventually.

Do you or any one know of the hotels/guest houses near the ski slops in Murren, Saas Fee, Zermatt and Verbier?

Thanks,
Joy

As much as I love Murren and would normally never recommend a stay in Grindlewald over Murren, even I admit that the Grindelwald area has a lot more options for skiing. So does Wengen. There is a ton of info on these ski areas available--guidebooks, ski message boards like epicski.com, websites--I'd really do some research to figure out which areas suit you best, then start looking for accomodation.

Wow, thanks all of you for such great information!

BTW, how did you get around to all the Jungfrau ski resorts, Muerren-Schilthorn, Kleine Scheidegg-Maennlichen, and Grindelwald? Are they easily accessible by trains and buses?

What are your favorite hotels/guest houses you would recommand.

Thanks,
joy

"Are they easily accessible by trains and buses?" Yes.

I went skiing in this area several years ago, and I agree that Grindelwald has better and more pistes. Murren may be higher, but the pistes were shorter. See the movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" for the reason why.

Yes, I like long trails than short ones too.

There was an old movie with Robert Redford, I don't remember where it was filmed, but I remembered as he skied down the slope, it was looooooong..., great movie.

Anyone else also skied in Switzerland?
Love to hear more.

Thanks :)

Tho I have seen lots of James Bond movies, I don't remember seeing "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". It will be showing on tv next week. :D

The last time I visited Europe was in 2001. Arrived in Paris on the day the Twin Towers was strucked, my flight left just few hours before all airports in the U.S. frozed. God Bless.

The Paris main station was like a maze, Austria and Italy wasn't so confusing. But now I'm making so many stops in the ski resorts, I'm sure Swiss train stations and transfers will be a challenge, I'll have fun trying tho. :)

10 miles of terrane huh? Nice!
I wonder how long is the longest run.

Thanks, :)

Cool, does that mean I would stay in the town of Lauterbrunnen?

Skiing west side of the mountain, are gondolas within walking distance of the Lauterbrunnen town?

Have you skied Zermatt or Saas Fee?
