My niece will be in Strasbourg over the Christmas holiday, she would like to go skiing for one day and would like to visit a Christmas market for the day, she will be travelling by train.
Probably the closest places to ski are either Le Lac Blanc (France) or Feuerberg (Germany) both are within fifty miles or so. Both would be spotty to dismal (hit or miss for good snow and mundane slopes from what I've seen - - I've never skied at either and never even been through there in the winter). Also, I don't know how to get to either except by car. I have no idea how to get a ski forecast, but suspect that Le Lac Blanc would have the least possibility. Of the markets I know nothing since shopping for anything except grub make me nervous.
Here's a website that has information on Christmas in Alsace. I haven't visited Alsace during the Christmas season, but it's on my bucket list.... http://noel.tourisme-alsace.com/
There are several ski resorts in the Vosges Mountains. Although not the Alps, the elevations are still rather impressive. I don´t know the names off hand, but some should be open that time of year.
