Fontrevault Abbey in the Loire Valley, where Eleanor, husband Henry II and son Richard I were all buried.

Although the duchess of Aquitaine, Eleanor didn't spend much time there. Her court was in Poitiers when she was married to Henry II. There is a tomb in her effigy at the Abbey of Fontevraud near Saumur in the Loire Valley but her remains disappeared during the French Revolution. Nonetheless, the Abbey is worth seeing and the surrounding country is beautiful. She was imprisoned in England.

Ah, the lovely Eleanor; creator of empire, wife of two kings, mother to two more. In Poitiers, she and Henry began St. Peter's cathedral; they're said to be portrayed in the lower pane of the window marking the crucifixion of St. Peter. Also there, the old Palais de Justice (begun by her ancestors), where Eleanor built the "Hall of Lost Footsteps" so-called because it's so big. About an hour's drive north is Fontevraud-L'Abbaye, the site where Eleanor, Henry, Richard the Lionheart, and Isabella (wife of John) are buried; wonderful effigies. She died at the abbey in her 80's. Eleanor spent much of her childhood (during the summer) at Talmont Castle on the coast, the ruins of which still exist (town of Talmont Saint Hilaire). It's open April thru October, and the local town puts on medieval life displays thru July and August. And if you're at the Louvre, you can see a crystal vase, a wedding present to her 1st husband, Louis VII of France.
