I plan on flying into Vienna and than tour the city and surrounding area and than drive to Slovenia and ultimately to Croatia. This is a bucket list trip so now I can see everything, but would like input of people who have been to these countries on sites to see. I am mainly interested in small villages, the mountains, etc. Any input would be interested.
I traveled this area last year. We toured:
Hallstatt, Austria: pretty, very scenic, very relaxing Vienna, Austria (with a daytrip to the Wachau Valley): Vienna has amazing history and culture. Great city. Lots of contruction and noise though last year. Jackhammers everywhere. Hopefully that is not always the case. The winery tour of Wachau was our most favorite day of the whole trip. Lake Bled, Slovenia (with a daytrip to the Julian Alps): Lake Bled was okay, but not a lot to do there. The daytrip to the Alps was gorgeous and well worth it. Getting out and hiking was just what we needed. But I did get carsick. Take dramamine for all the windy twisty roads. drove to Plitvice Parks: beautiful Split, Croatia: worth a stop. The history of the palace there is worth a stop alone. And at the end of a trip...its sure nice to see palm trees. ended in Dubrovnik, Croatia: best seafood ever. I just wanted to eat and eat and eat.
