Sights of Interest Along Rt A22 From Verona to Innsbruck, etc.

We have planned a (first time)trip to Italy and elected to extend the trip to drive up to Innsbruck & over to Liecht & Zurich. We really are not set on any specific route of travel. We basically just want to see the country-side. Any suggestions with regard points of interest or sights too worthwhile to miss? Appreciate any suggestions that will make the drive a fantastic experience! Thank you.

I need to double check and make sure that's A22, but Bolzano was a cute stop between Verona and Innsbruck. The Ice Man is worth seeing. Parking was a bit of a challenge, though (at least for the parking phobic like me.)

Just keep your eyes open, you'll see some amazing Alpine scenery. When you make your left turn towards Zurich, don't miss the Bodensee on the border with Germany, Austria and Switzerland. There's a number of gorgeous little towns on the lake, but my favorite is Lindau.

Hi Cheri,

First I have two questions... are you looking to stay a night or two along this drive? What time of year are you going?

It is the A22. Along this route you will see amazing scenery. With a few short detours you'll see spectacular scenery.

If you have a night (or the time) between Verona and Innsbruck, turn off the A22 at Chiusa/Klausen and head into the Val Gardena. It's about 30 minute drive from A22. Spectacular!

Other stops we love along the A22...
Brixen/Bressanone

Sterzing/Vipiteno (along with Castle Tasso/Reifenstein... we didn't get in to see this, maybe you'll have better luck)

Chiusa/Klausen

For a really spectacular drive, from Bolzano, head towards Meran/Merano and then to St. Leonardo in Passiria and then take the Timmelsjoch Pass (really amazing) into the Otztal in Austria. We stayed in Soelden in this area. Fantastic scenery! At the end of the Oetztal (town of Oetz) you'll be about 30 miles west of Innsbruck and on your way to Switzerland.

Another route we've driven... from Bozen/Bolzano to Meran/Merano and continue west through the Val Venosta/Vinschgau (lots of nice castles along this route) to either Landeck, Austria (and west towards Switzerland) or leave Val Venosta/Vinschgau at Schluderns/Sluderno and go through Switzerland (Val Mustair) into the Davos area and then to Zurich.

Hope this helps.

Paul
