I am planning a trip to Germany and would like to visit Trier as I have ancestors from there. Can I make it a day trip from Frankfurt- it will be one of my last stops before I leave but I don't know how much time to allow. Any comments appreciated.
Yes, it will be a long day but it's possible. The station to station train time is just over 3 hrs, one way. Add to that the time to get to the station, wait for the train, then the 3 hrs of train time, seeing the sights in Trier, going back to the Trier train station, waiting for the train, then the 3 hrs back to Frankfurt, then to your hotel. Your total transportation time, including the waiting, etc, will be 7 to 8 hours for the day.
Trier deserves more than a quick visit as there is so much history going back to before 300AD. We stayed 4 days in Trier as we schedule it as a rest stop during our 8 week trip.
We took a cruise on the Mosel and a city tour which was very interesting.
There is just so much to see:
Aula Palatina Basilica..
Market Square..
Elector's Palace..Landesmuseum is a must and of course..Porta Nigra
We really enjoyed our visit in Trier.
When you arrive in Trier you can visit the Porta Negra, town center then head for the extensive Roman Ruins. It was a good day trip from Cochem but Frankfurt adds a lot of travel time.
