We are visiting family in Zurich. We are interested in a side-trip outside of Switzerland. Past trips have included Prague, Dubrovnik and Budapest. Given the dollar's weakness against the Euro, does anyone have any suggestions for a sidetrip for a few days that won't break the bank?

Why not explore other areas of Switzerland; like the Berner Oberland.

Unless you can find another family to visit, your only inexpensive sidetrips are to the East (Poland, for one) wherever you are out of Euro country. Also consider Croatia, Bulgaria, and Turkey.
We are headed to visit family in Austria, and the Czech border is only a couple of miles away. Cesky Krumlov/Krumau for us is only an hour's trip, so we do it by car. Food and drink still is considerably cheaper in CZ than in Austria. Nevertheless, we plan on a trip through South Tirol - a fantastic recreation area - on the way to, what else, Switzerland (to visit friends). Checking accommodations and restaurant menus I find these are less expensive than Swiss ones.

Lake Constance area in Germany is beautiful and more affordable than Switz.
The train goes from Zurich airport directly to Lindau a short ride and drops you in this wonderful walking/bicycling town on the lake. ck it out, it is popullar with German families so book a room early.This is always my first stop after landing in Zurich.
