Side Trips from Barcelona

My husband and I are spending 2 weeks in Barcelona. We want to take side trips preferably by train or may rent a car. We have booked an apartment for two weeks. What are your suggestions?

I love Barcelona, but there is a lot in the area to see. I second the recommendation of Montserrat. Girona is also a very nice city to visit with a fantastic city wall to walk around on. Pals and other small towns in Costa Brava are also worth a stop. Tossa del Mar might be a bit crowded during the summer (I was there in April).

You will love the area - have fun.

I spent a week in Barcelona years ago and remember that there is not much of interest nearby.

Check on the cost of a car rental; the rail service is good in that part of France and may be much cheaper for you.

Remember that petrol is about $9 a gallon at last report.

I rented a car and drove into the ?Pyrenees Mountains. There are a number of interesting Villages there. I would get a good highway map and study it.

Irene - We spent about 10 days in Barcelona in April...a great town.

We drove to the paradore in Cardona for lunch and to see the countyside. I highly recommend it as a special treat, "castles in Spain" trip with excellent but expensive food and a chance to see a classic piece of history. It is off the track and we were the only tourists there when we visited in April. The view of and from this mountain top fortress is not to be missed...a trip highlight.

We also tried Madremania in the Costa Brava - a medieval town that you might enjoy while in the area. We also drove up to Provence for an overnight to see old friends, passing thru the Costa Brava.

Have a good trip, neighbor.
