Will be in Basel before we head over to Paris on the train. Are there any quick train rides from Basel into Germany, either the Black Forest or a great little town to explore for the day? This will just be a day trip so it has to be close! Thanks!
Hi, Nicole. Yes. You can take a train from Basel to Baden Baden, a very beautiful town in the Black Forest.
You will need to change trains in Offenburg.
If you'd like to see photos of my last trip there you can see them on my website: home.comcast.net/~bepineurope
Have fun!
Closer to Basel and really beautiful are Freiburg (university town, medival market square, old cathedral etc.) and Staufen (medival small town, most picturesque)... You could rent a small car for just a day if you wanted. If you prefer train keep in mind that Basel Badischer Bahnhof station is considered to be German domestic and therefore all special rates apply from there (as opposed to Basel SBB station from where you'd have to pay much, much higher fares). You can get to the Bad. Bhf by tram from downtown Basel. The Baden-Württemberg ticket and all other DB specials are valid from that station (www.bahn.de). You enter railway-Germany by entering that station building.
