My son and I will be in Spain from June 12-20. He wants to see the windmills in Consuegra. Does anyone know of a bus tour etc. that will take us from Madrid to Consuegra? I am hoping to avoid the hassles of renting a car. THANKS
I was intrigued by your question and by the lack of replies; have you researched at all? I looked on Trip Advisor in the Toledo forum, and there really is no helpful information. It seems that most people see the windmills at Consuegra using a rental car; one respondent mentioned that there is a public bus from Toledo which takes about an hour...no link provided to look at schedules. Good luck with your quest!
Try this: http://www.samar.es/transportes.php?id=2 I haven't used this bus line, or traveled to Consuegra...con o sin mi suegra....(sorry, I couldn't resist!) but I found it through a Google search. Like many (all?) bus line websites in Spain, its only in Spanish; and it gives you a drop down menu of three choices of bus stations for departure from Madrid (I chose Estacion Sur) but if you play around with it you'll get the info you need.
THANKS!! I did find the site for the buses and had some trouble with the language. Luckily, my son was able to figure it out and it looks like there is a bus from Madrid to Consuegra. We are going to play it by ear and check it out when we get to Madrid. I will be sure to post my findings when we return incase anyone else has the same desires. @Ginny, I searched TripAdvisor also (one of my favorite sites) and had no luck either. I really do not want to rent a car if I can't help it.
While we were at Consuegra in April a bus tour showed up - so they do exist. I noticed the bus stations have an information desk (as well as multiple bus lines). The information desks seem set up to help you find exactly what you are looking for (and reservations are almost never necessary). There is a castle ruin there you can walk through as well as a line of windmills. You can see the inside of the windmill that operates as the information center and watch a brief video describing how they worked. There are some good photo sight lines of the windmills along the crest of the hill. That said, there are similar windmills on many hills in the area. If I had known that, I'd probably have skipped Consuegra and just toured Belmonte castle instead. On the way you will see more than a few windmills along the hilltops and a much better castle to tour when you get there.
Interesting thread! We came upon these windmills (and the castle) completely by accident on our way to Toledo from Granada and turned off the highway to see them. I had no idea what the name of the town even was! It was one of my favorite stops, but that might be because it wasn't something we had planned, just something we found along the way. I have to say, though, that the view was incredible from the hill.
