On the way home from an upcoming trip to Prague, I will have a 4 1/2 hour layover in the Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. Would it be totally crazy to try to spend an hour or two in the city? Are there any suggestions for a more practical place or way to kill that big chunk of time?

Liz, leaving an airport for anything less than an overnight is always risky. A lot can go wrong. Unless you've done it before with repeated success, leaving the airport is not advised.

there is an airport museum in Schipol airport that is very good or you could go to Aalsmeer Flower auction that runs M-F 730 to 11am nearby to airport.
otherwise I would stay put.

Liz, Schiphol Airport has a part of the Rijksmuseum collection onsite, which might be a good place to spend a couple of hours. It's inside the secured area but that shouldn't be a problem since you are changing planes. There are also tons of shops [including department stores like H&M].
