Should we spend 6 nights in Barcelona, or divide it up?

Trip with girlfiend to Barcelona in April. We have 6 nights.

Are we better to spend the full week in Barcelona, or split it up? If we split, how should we split?

For example, we could fly from BCN to Mallorca, spend a night, then ferry to Valencia, spend a night, then train back to Barcelona for 4 nights.

This will be our first trip to Spain and we will have just spent a week sight-seeing in Italy.

Madrid is only 3 hours from Barcelona via AVE train…you should consider 3 days each in both cities. In Madrid, one should visit the Palacio Real and The Prado at a minimum…so much to experience. With one week and a desire to visit two world-class destinations, I would split my time this way.

I agree with Michael....if you want to see Spain, take the AVE to Madrid. Otherwise, you'll just spend a couple of your valuable days travelling. Barcelona and Mallorca are good spots to visit, but if you want to experience "Spain," then you need to branch out of Catalonia. Valencia is not one of the tourist "highlights" that I would pick, and the ferry ride from Mallorca is something like 7 or 8 hours....a waste of a day. Spend 3 days in Madrid, with maybe one day set aside for a day trip to Toledo or Segovia.

I've lived outside Madrid, and just went to Mallorca in September. I would have to say while I like Mallorca, it's not as "Spanish" as Madrid. Go to Madrid, day trip to Toledo or Segovia!
