Should we just give up on Gimmelwald?

In the third week of April on our way south from France to Venice, we were planning to stop in Gimmelwald for a couple of days and explore that Jungfrau region. That’s looking like it might not be good idea since the trails are not open and the villages not so active. (Thanks Tom for your input on that). Do others agree and if so any alternative locations to see a bit of this area? Because it’s down in the valley, would Lauterbrunnen be a better idea? Thanks. Pat

My opinion is the same as Tom's. 3rd week in April falls right in the middle of the "between time" for places like Murren. If you're in the area anyway, a possibility is to tour the Lauterbrunnen Valley floor and get the spectacular views--Yosemite Valley on Steroids. Reason I suggest this is, the Lauterbrunnen train station is at 2,500 ft above sea level, the top of the Jungfrau mountain railway is at 11,500 ft, and Murren is at 5,300--and in general the temp decreases 3 to 4 degrees F for every 1,000 ft you ascend. Thus the temps can be bearable on the valley floor, say 55F, whereas at the same time at the Jungfraujoch it can be 25, windy and clouded in.

Lauterbrunnen would definately be a better idea in April. You can still visit Gimmelwald, just don't expect any businesses to be open. Provided there's no snow, there are a few hiking options. The road that connects Gimmelwald and Murren is paved, so it should always be open. Plus, the trail that connects Gimmelwald to the valley floor should also be passable.
