short trip to Germany

Trying to plan a short trip to Germany in late-October. Fly into Frankfurt and out of Munich. Other than purchasing a country rail pass, what are your suggested routes/sites from Frankfurt to Munich? I have 7 full days. Must sees and hotels, etc. Many thanks.

I might not purchase a rail pass. Between Frankfurt and Munich you will possibly be almost the full time in Bavaria. You can use the Bayern-Ticket at 27 euros/ day on regional trains for 2 to 5 people after 9 AM each day.

Our choices between F & M were Würzburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber & Regensburg. Würzburg has castle across the river, an archbishop's residence and an attractive pedestrian zone. Rothenburg is a fairly intact walled medieval town. Regensburg is new favorite of ours. I like the gothic cathedral and bridge over the Danube. My wife likes the Thurn and Taxis Palace/Residence. We both enjoyed the layout of the town with its multitude of plätze with churches.

Hotels. We are usually careful with our hotel money. In Würzburg we liked the Sankt Josef and in Rothenburg the Gasthof Goldener Greifen, both Rick Steve's recommendations. In Regensburg we splurged a bit on the Park Hotel Maximilian to my wife's taste for things baroque.

Regards, Gary

If you're going to spend some time on the Romantic Road make sure you get to see Dinkelsbuhl and Nordlingen. They are both fantastic and charming and not as over-run with people as Rothenburg o.d.T.

Rothenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg shouldn't be missed. Head up to Garmisch if the weather is good; Rick's suggestion of Andech's Monastery makes for an excellent short outing from Munich - involves a lovely hike with views of Ammersee Lake if you take the S-Bahn to Herrsching to get there.

Thanks for the advice. On the hotels... do you think I should get reservations ahead of time? About how much per night, do you recall?

I am not sure about reservations in October. We traveled in April last year and made our reservations a day ahead of time by phone or internet. That worked well. This summer, in high season, we reserved all of our rooms in advance.

Our rooms at the Sankt Josef (Würzburg) and the Gasthof Goldener Greifen (Rothenburg) were in the 80-85 euros range. Park Hotel Maximilian was about 100 euros. We had good luck reserving rooms through HRS, often beating the price at the hotel's website:

We used the HRS at both the Sankt Josef and the Park Hotel Maximilian.

Raquel, I have been to Rothenburg, it's a great place to see. It's about and hour or two from Angie's place.
