The rail schedule shows shows 24 minutes to transfer in Monaco/ Monte Carlo and 18 minutes at Nice Ville. How big a problem for two relatively inexperienced train travelers?
Both are small stations. At the most it would be changing from one platform to another or waiting for your train to leave and the next train to pull in. The time is more than adequate.
Gerard, good question. I'm doing the same stretch in August. Can I ask you how you are getting in and out of Nice and where you are coming from, and going to? I haven't quite figured out this stretch of my trip yet.
Are you backpacking?
Gerard
There is mostly half hourly or hourly service from Ventimille to Cannes via Monaco and Nice. I don't understand why you need to change twice?
What time of day are you travelling?
Frank- Thanks for the insight. It looks like it should work.
Owen- We need to change in Monte Carlo and Nice in order to get from Ventimiglia to Avignon. Not backing, though.
Nigel
We are traveling in the morning. There are frequent trains, but the schedules show they require changes in both Monte Carlo and Nice.
Thanks
Gerard
I'm trying to work out the double connection. We've done the trip loads of times and can't see why you need a double connection. The only way might be if you are trying to use TGV as much as possible instead of the normal trains. That might give you a TGV-TGV connection in Nice after a change in Monaco.
My memory is that the slightly earlier Paris TGV is platform 1 at Nice and the Avignon one is a couple of platforms over and only platform 1 at Nice has anything other than stairs.
The local train from Italy often stops on the same island platform as the Avignon TGV.
Where are you checking schedules? The best help is with the German website, I use the British version of www.bahn.co.uk because I don't have to switch language.

Nigel,
Both you and Gerard are right! According to the timetables on the German Rail site, a connection in Monaco is required through 3 July. From 4 July onward no connection is needed.
Tim,
Thanks for clearing up the confusion.
Nigel,
Thanks for helping. Our trip is before July 3 so that must be why I was getting those times.
