My husband, son, and I have only a day or two in Frankfurt prior to taking the train to Rome. Can anyone suggest convenient and reasonable lodging which will allow us to see a bit of the city? Any suggestions regarding how we should spend our short time there?
Are you using Frankfurt as a gateway? Have you thought of staying somewhere outside Frankfurt. I can attest to not staying by the train station. We stayed at an american hotel chain, whose name includes B and W, not knowing the area. While I was not concerned for our safety, we did get a laugh when we found out we were down the street from the red light district. Also, we did not find many restaurants. We decided to go to Heidelberg for dinner the second night. Having been there for the auto show twice, I have never thought of exploring Frankfurt itself. Andreas might be more of a help on this since he is in Frankfurt.
Carmen, I can definitely not recommend you staying at one of those moderate hotels in the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) area. Even though the choice of drugs or women from Eastern Europe is manifold there, I strongly suggest you resist ;-). For hotels check with www.hrs.com. Anything in the Hilton, Westin Grand area is save, good, pretty and easily accessible. There is one hotel though, that isn't that far from the station yet is very far from the dark side of it: The IBIS Hotel Centrum. It's about a 5 mins walk from the station to the river's embankment. It's a clean 2star hotel with AC and everything you may need. From there it's a short walk to the stylisch Westhafen restaurants, the river's embankments with their beautiful parks. You can walk to Römer Sq. along the water without all the big city's noise and chaos. For the main sights check with this link..

In June we had a one night layover in FRA, and chose to stay at the Hotel Paris (www.hotelparis.de) It was about one block South of the train station; between the station and the river. The rooms were not large, but were bright and airy, and everything looked new. The $80E (for 2)/nite charge included a adequate breakfast.
We had a wonderful walk to dinner that nite, along the river walk, and across the foot bridge. We were trying to get to the Sachsenhausen area for some of the numerous restaurants, but got caught in a rain storm, and ate at a wonderful Greek restaurant.
We never saw any weird people, and we walked back late at nite.
We picked this place because of the convenience, excelent value, and great reviews on Trip Advisor:
We would not hesitate to go back.
If I were in your place, I would take a train from Franfurt to St. Goar on the Rhein, catch a ferry ride for an hour, climb around Rheinfels castle ruins and stay in a hotel in St. Goar. Take the DB back in time to catch your train to Rome.
It will be a fond and affordable memory.
Frankfurt is modern and, in my mind, the least interesting place in Germany.
