Short-Cut Up the Eiffel Tower?

Hey all! In Rick's Paris 2010 book, he says that by the time we're reading his book, there should be an online reservation system which allows tourists to book 1/2-hour slots to go up the Eiffel Tower. Does anyone know if this is already in place? I went to the www.toureiffel.fr site, and it says online reservations will be available "end of 2009." Yet, it has private reservations and group reservations available, too. Might be too much to presume that my husband and I, regular tourists, would be considered "private" guests... A'way, I was hoping someone who's visited recently would comment. We're going there in mid-September--a couple weeks from now! :D

Thanks!

Hi Carol,

I was actually planning to go up the Eiffel Tower right before sunset, too, as recommended by Rick--and now by you! :) I thought that it'd still be crowded though, and figured that if I can save time with an online reservation, I'd try.

Your info puts me more at ease though, so maybe we'll just wait in line. I'll have to check what time is sunset, but at any rate it'll still be "evening" by the time we go up.

Thanks!

Hi Marcellina,
I don't know about the short cut but we found going in the evening is the best idea. We went one morning in May, half an hour before opening time to "beat the crowds". We found hundreds/thousands of people already there. Surely we would have stood for a couple of hours. We joined a queue for about 10 minutes and decided to come back. We returned about half an hour before sunset, stood in line just 20-30 minutes and the tower lit up while we were on top. The city lights were gradullay lighting up too. When we descended the tower and were leaving the area, I looked back over my shoulder to see the tower twinkling! All of the lights were sparkling on and off - it was spectacular! We loved Paris and I'm sure you will too.

We're just back and I think you can get tickets online now. Double check that. We went up about 10:30 one night and while there were no lines, we were only able to go to the second floor. You might want to to keep in mind that if you want to go all the way up to the top, you need to get there before they make that switch. I think the cut off time is on line, too.
