Anyone have any suggestions on how we could get wine back to Texas from France? We were hoping to buy several cases but have been reading that Texas has new legislation that does not allow wine to be shipped in. HELP!!
Suggest you check with a Texas wine importer -- they may have some ideas, and you may not be able to ship as much as you imply directly to your address and need to go through it. And, you may be able to purchase most of it cheaper in Texas than in France.
Bring it as checked luggage. Only choice. All liquor laws in the US are state specific. If you cannot ship to Texas the shipping companies will not accept the shipment. Also it is very, if not extremely expensive, to ship from Europe. This has been discussed many times before so look back or use the search box for more detailed discussions.
From the TABC website: "FOREIGN WINERIES: Under current state law, wineries located outside of the United States are not authorized to ship wine directly to consumers in Texas." Sorry. BTW, it looks like you can still receive shipments (with 'tweaked' restrictions on amounts) from out-of-state or in-state wineries, but you can't from out-of-state retailers or wholesalers...this seems to be part of the new regulations from last summer. I don't know if you have a particular wine in mind, or you're just hoping to come across some new favorites, but either way you may be able to get them here - either the winery can get them to their USA distributor, then to your local retailer, or perhaps they're already available locally...
The TABC strikes again! I am 32 years old, last year a bartender didn't want to serve me a drink because he wasn't sure the TABC would allow him to serve me because my out of state license didn't have some silly thing Texas licenses have. sigh.
Gosh Ken, when did Wisconsin stop putting the DoB on the DL?!? ;-) (sigh) The TABC has more than a bit of power...and they just got a bit more back, hence this thread...(and that poor bartender was probably honestly spooked, but unless you are VERY youthful looking, ummm...shaking head...)
If you do figure out how to get wine legally shipped in, don't do it during hot weather. Ask them to hold your purchase and ship in the fall or winter.
Generally you cannot ship wine privately into the US. There may be some exceptions or complicated ways around it, but your only option is to bring what you want in your luggage. It is my understanding that you can bring more than the duty free amount, just it. In most cases, customs will waive you through without a duty if the number of bottles is relatively small and clearly for private use. Putting wine into checked luggage can also be an issue due to breakage and the cold temps in the luggage holds. Plan carefully.
Sorry to contradict my fellow Doug(las) but shipping wine into the United States is dependent on the laws of the state of residency. The larger wineries in Europe are pretty savvy about which states allow deliveries to private parties and which don't. I have had multiple cases shipped to Oregon without trouble.
