We're thinking of a day trip from Vienna to Melk and visit the Abbey, then cruise down the Danube from Melk through Wachau to Krems, then train back to Vienna. We found a website with some information about a ship-train-culture all-in-one ticket from Vienna to Melk and back. Would anyone recommend this for a day trip? The website is not complete: Does the all-in-one ticket include entrance fees to the Melk Abbey and other museums in Krems? Is there a good website for more complete information about this day trip all-in-one ticket?
Hi V K,
Several years ago we took an early train from Vienna to Melk, toured Melk Abbey, then walked down to the landing to board the riverboat "Stadt Wien". Our train ride plus the cruise back to Vienna were covered 100% by our Eurail Pass. Whether those passes presently include the river trip you may learn by contacting the RS staff (above click on Railpasses).
Our river cruise took more time than we expected and we disembarked in the Grinzing area in time for dinner at a Heuriger. If we did that trip again, we would not cruise to Vienna, but get a train at some intermediate point and thence to Vienna.
To answer your question, we thoroughly enjoyed that entire day and remember the details fondly. Depending on prevailing fine weather, we recommend it highly. It's possible the trip would be just as enjoyable in the rain, but we don't know.
Gute Reise!... P
Thanks for the tip. We do plan to cruise downstream from Melk to Krems and then take the train back from Krems to Vienna. Just wondering if the ship-train-culture fare covers entrances to museums.
