I would love to hear any suggestions for Sete in France. We are in port there one day. There are excusrions to Carcassone, but would prefer to do things on our own. Thanks in advance
The tourist office offers tours. They have a very good tour of the fish auctions at around 4:30. If The thing about the tours is that they may or may not be available in English. The tourist office is centrally located in town and will be able to tell you what's available. You could also rent bikes (electric or not) in town for a biking day. There are beaches on the outskirts of town with a few food outlets as well as changerooms and bathrooms etc. You could take a city bus there, but I think a taxi wouldn't cost too much as Sete is not that large. You could hang out in town and eat fresh seafood on a terrace overlooking the canal. You also have the option of taking the train into Montpellier which is a lovely city with some interesting sights.
Bouzigues is a cute little town about 15 minutes away overlooking the "basin" where all the oysters are farmed -lots of nice restaurants overlooking the water and of course the oysters are super fresh. There is also a little oyster museum there which is quite interesting if you want to know anything about how these things are farmed.
I last camped out in Sete for 2 weeks way back in 1960 so I'm sorry I don't have up to date info for you about Sete. However, I strongly recommend seeing Carcassone, one of the few walled cities left and quite interesting from a historic point of view. shelly
Carcassonne is FAR from Sete...it will eat up the whole day and you won't have much time to really see the town. I suggest you stay in Sete and watch the water jousting...they construct wooden boats with raised platforms off one end and try to knock each other into the water with poles. The town is charming as well with plenty of places to walk around, eat in cafes, and people watch. This is a beautiful corner of France! If you want to get a cab or rent a car for the day you can go see the huge flocks of wild flamingos in the Camarque or over to the really interesting Ephebe museum in Cap d'Agde containing lots of archaeological finds from the bottom of the Mediterranean. The town of Pezenas nearby is stunningly beautiful! Small winding stone streets with beautiful shops and cafes...or you can just cruise the countryside around Pezenas...many, many family owned wineries. Lots to do!
Just to keep the facts straight: There's at least three or four dozen walled cities in France. The one closest to Sete is Aigues-Mortes. Driving from Sete to Carcassonne takes a bit over an hour, but not an hour and a half.
It's worth spending time exploring Sete. Aigues-Mort is interesting visually, although a real tourist trap.
