September 2011-Switz/Como/CT/So France/Paris-too much?

My husband and I are planning a trip the 2nd week of September 2011..we are considering the following, what do you think about the route and what about the WEATHER?

Day 1, arrive Zurich, rent car drive to Interlaken
Day 2, Interlaken, hiking and touring, stay Interlaken
Day 3, drive to Como, Italy, tour, stay Como
Day 4 Drive to Cinque Terre, stay in CT
Day 5 Cinque Terre, stay in CT
Day 6 Drive to Nice, tour stay in Nice
Day 7 Nice/beach, stay in Nice
Day 8 Drive to Avignon, explore, stay overnight
Day 9 Drive to Geneva (return car) train to Paris,
Day 10 Paris
Day 11 Paris
Day 12 home to Chicago

Need to double back to Swit. to return car, $700 charge if returned to different country.

We are adventurous, love hiking exploring countryside, dinners and wine... but is this too much?

Well, everyone is different, so all I can say is that it would be too much for me. As I see it, you will be driving...some days several hours..6 out of 11 days. To go where you have indicated I suppose the route is OK, but Ed or one of the other posters who is more into driving than I am can comment on that. The weather should be fine, though there is always the chance that the one day you have set aside for beach time could be rainy or chilly. So my suggestion would be to reduce the travel somewhat. My suggestion, for what it is worth, is: fly into Nice, take 2 days there, then the TGV to Avignon, rent a car and spend Days 3-4-5 in Provence. Day 6 Drive from Avignon to Chamonix. Days 7,8 Chamonix area hiking etc. Day 9 return car at Lyons and train to Paris. Days 9,10,11 in Paris. Day 12 fly home. Even this seems a little rushed to me, but I think it would be doable. I am sure other posters will have excellent ideas, so keep checking in.

IMO the segments of Como(I hope you mean Lake Como) to CT, CT to Nice and Avignon to Geneva are very long drives that are exhausting. Have you cked the miles and time for those segments? try www.viamichelin.com for routes time/kms. Zurich to Interlaken also can easily be done by train and I hope you are including a day or 2 for the Berner Oberland (Lauterbrunnen) area nr Interlaken. It is gorgeous and a must see and hike. I only drive a max of 4 hrs as a rule in Europe and I am exhausted after that. After all some relaxation is a part of vacation. It is good that you are asking I would re route a bit and at least leave CT for another trip. You could encounter some rain during Sept.
